What Is Expected of You During Orthodontic Treatment?
At Avenue Orthodontics, we are dedicated to providing you with individual attention and customized care of the most surpassing standard. At every stage of your orthodontic treatment at our Bayside, NY area practice serving College Point, Whitestone, and other communities throughout the region, we will support, encourage, and communicate openly with you. You will never be made to feel like just another patient because you and the Avenue Orthodontics team are partners in oral health. That’s something we take very seriously.
This partnership requires a commitment on your part, too, however, and it is important that you understand this before you begin orthodontic treatment. In order to achieve the best possible results in the timeline set forth in your orthodontic plan, you will have to be an active participant in your treatment. There will be certain expectations of you, and these will be laid out in detail before you proceed with treatment.
Ultimately, the work we do together will be worth it. Every time you look in the mirror and see that healthy, vibrant smile, your patience and effort will be rewarded.
We encourage you to read the following general information about what is expected of patients during orthodontic treatment. For a more specific idea of what will be expected of you during your orthodontic treatment, please contact our Bayside-area practice to schedule your initial consultation with Dr. Eleni Michailidis or Dr. Abraham Chahine today.
Be sure to make and keep your appointments.
As you proceed with treatment, regular appointments at Avenue Orthodontics are essential to the success of your orthodontic plan. You should be prepared to visit Dr. Michailidis or Dr. Chahine every six to eight weeks during your treatment for adjustments and to ensure that your teeth are shifting toward their optimal positions in the mouth according to plan. Depending on your treatment, your visits may be more or less frequent than this. Whatever the case, please know that if you fail to attend these appointments, it can delay your progress and add to your treatment time – and potentially to the cost of your treatment.
It is equally important to arrive on time for your appointmentsespecially if you are wearing traditional braces.
Follow all instructions provided to you by our orthodontists .
Our orthodontists will provide you with specific and thorough instructions on how you should care for your teeth and orthodontic appliance during treatment. Your ability and willingness to follow these instructions will help to determine the ultimate success of the treatment, not to mention how soon you complete it. Be sure to eat a healthy diet, avoiding overly acidic and sugary foods and drinks, while avoiding crunchy, sticky, and chewy foods – especially if you are wearing traditional braces. Maintain excellent oral hygiene by brushing and flossing at least twice a day and after every meal.
Wear your appliances as advised.
Whether it’s rubber bands with metal braces, removable aligners with Invisalign® therapy, headgear at night, or retainers during the maintenance phase of treatment, you must be diligent about wearing your appliances exactly as advised by our orthodontists. The failure to do so could have a profoundly negative effect on your treatment, possibly even causing your teeth to shift back into their misaligned positions, undoing the results you’ve worked so hard to achieve.
Take care of your gums.
Gum disease is the most common disease in the United States, affecting roughly three-quarters of the population to various degrees. While braces will not harm your gums, bacteria certainly will, which is why you have to be meticulous about your brushing and flossing habits while you are undergoing orthodontic treatment. Yes, brushing and flossing will be somewhat more challenging, especially if you are wearing clear braces or traditional metal braces; however, investing the effort in keeping your gums healthy will help to keep you free from the disease that is the number-one cause of tooth loss among adults. Our orthodontists will provide you with strategies to brush and floss effectively with braces.
