Of the many advances in orthodontics over the past twenty years, none has caught the public’s attention quite like Invisalign®. There’s good reason for this, too. The Invisalign® system has revolutionized orthodontic treatment. Among suitable candidates, Invisalign® offers a wealth of benefits that set it apart from traditional metal braces and other methods of realigning the teeth.
Patients who schedule Invisalign® consultations at our Bayside-area orthodontics practice are generally aware of the fact that the treatment offers a visually discreet, esthetically appealing alternative to conspicuous metal braces. However, they often leave our office surprised by the many oral health benefits that Invisalign® also has to offer.
We invite you to read about some of these benefits below, and then contact Avenue Orthodontics to find out whether you are a good candidate for Invisalign® treatment today.
Five Invisalign® Benefits That Have Nothing to Do with Aesthetics
Okay, so let’s get the most obvious and well-known benefit of Invisalign® out of the way: the plastic aligners are clear and virtually undetectable, especially compared to metal braces. You will be able to speak, laugh, and smile without having to worry about the appearance of your teeth every time you open your mouth. Some people like the look of braces, and some don’t. If you happen to fall into the latter category, then the transparency of the aligners is probably a big part of the reason you’re considering Invisalign® in the first place.
But Invisalign® has so many other benefits to offer. Here are five of them:
1. You can eat whatever you want.
Obviously, as orthodontists, we aren’t encouraging you to load up on foods that are bad for your teeth, but one of the biggest benefits of Invisalign® is that the aligners can be removed for eating. This means that there are no dietary restrictions associated with Invisalign® treatment, unlike treatment with metal braces. You can chomp down on an apple, enjoy a bag of popcorn at the movies, and even pop a piece of sugar-free gum in your mouth for a few minutes after dinner. As long as you wear your aligners for between 20 and 22 hours each day, you can enjoy whatever foods you like at mealtimes.
2. Your mouth will be free from discomfort.
Modern metal braces have come a long way. Brackets are smaller and less irritating to the inside of the mouth. However, Invisalign® aligners are crafted from a smooth plastic that will reduce the amount of discomfort. Each aligner will be customized to fit precisely over your teeth. You won’t have to worry about sores, cuts, or scrapes. In fact, you may frequently forget that you’re wearing the aligners at all.
3. It will be easier to maintain good oral health.
No matter which type of orthodontic treatment you choose to undergo, our team will help you maintain optimal oral health. However, with Invisalign®, you will have a much easier time keeping your teeth and gums healthy in between visits to our practice. This is because you will be able to remove your aligners to brush, floss, and rinse as you normally would. You also won’t have to worry about food particles getting stuck in your braces, which can contribute to the formation of white spots on the teeth, clinically known as demineralization.
4. ClinCheck offers a computer simulation of your Invisalign® results.
Our orthodontist will use sophisticated computer imaging software to plan out your Invisalign® treatment from beginning to end, from your first set of aligners to the last. This gives our patients the opportunity to visualize a simulation of their predicted final orthodontic result. You will have the chance to see what to expect and when to expect it. As long as you wear your aligners for at least 20 to 22 hours a day and follow all other instructions diligently, your Invisalign® treatment should go according to (our meticulous) plan.
5. Fewer demands will be placed on your time.
We love seeing our patients, but we understand that you’re busy. With traditional braces, especially during the early stages of treatment, we generally ask that our patients visit our practice at least once a month, and sometimes more often than that. Although Invisalign® aligners must be changed out every two weeks, Invisalign® patients usually only have to visit our practice every six weeks or so. In terms of overall treatment time, Invisalign® is usually able to produce desired results in roughly the same amount of time as traditional braces.
