Invisalign started as an orthodontic treatment option for adults, but has recently evolved to include teenagers who want an alternative to traditional braces. For those teenagers who don’t like the look of braces but want to enhance their smile, Invisalign Teen may be the right option.
How Does Invisalign Teen Work?
In today’s image-aware society, more teenagers are asking about other options to get straight teeth. Invisalign Teen uses the same basic principles as Invisalign. An Invisalign tray (or aligner) is worn for about two weeks before the patient switches to the next, successive tray. These trays are removable and virtually invisible, and they should be removed when eating, drinking and cleaning your teeth. If the trays are worn properly, teeth will move closer to their final alignment with each successive tray. In order for this to happen, Invisalign Teen trays should be worn at least 22 hours a day.
Straight Teeth with a Teen Lifestyle
Because Invisalign Teen aligners are removable, there are less limitations on what you can eat than with metal braces. So you can go ahead and eat most of the things you love without worrying about breaking a bracket or a wire.
Invisalign Teen aligners are also pretty comfortable, and are less bulky than braces. They fit in with a teenager’s busy and active extracurricular lifestyle. This can mean a lot to a teen who participates in sports or plays an instrument but still wants straight teeth without braces getting in the way.
Special Features for Teens
There are some features that Invisalign Teen includes to cater to the average teenage population. Compliance indicators can be added to track how well your teenager is wearing the aligners. These blue indicators placed near the molars of each aligner will gradually fade away the more the aligners are worn. This allows the patient, parent, and doctor to monitor how much the aligners have been worn. Invisalign Teen also factors in a greater likelihood of aligners being lost or broken, by providing six free replacement aligners over the treatment period. Since a teenager’s mouth is constantly changing and growing, Invisalign Teen includes “eruption tabs” to accommodate teeth that haven’t fully erupted into their adult position.
Is it Right for You?
Invisalign Teen must sound like a great treatment alternative, but unfortunately it’s not the best option for every teenager or orthodontic condition. Severely misaligned teeth and bites are not as effectively treated using removable aligners. In addition, the aligners won’t work as well if they aren’t worn the recommended 22 hours per day, and not all teenagers are going to be compliant enough to get the maximum benefit Invisalign Teen has to offer.
